It is told in the voice of the 12-year-old protagonist. This is the story of twin African American brothers and their family. Then, his dad collapses during basketball practice and Josh has to contend with even more change. He struggles with his anger, and doesn’t like that things are different. When a new girl starts at school JB is infatuated, and Josh suddenly feels alone. Josh’s dad is experiencing health problems, but refuses to go to the doctor, and Josh’s mom worries. It was traumatic and Josh sleeps with his dreads under his pillow. Josh’s head looks so bad that his mother takes him to the barber to have all of the dreads cut off. However, the stakes are higher for Josh, and when he loses the bet, JB goes to cut off a dreadlock and mistakenly takes five. Josh and JB are curious about their stay-at-home dad and wonder why he doesn’t play pro ball or coach.ĭuring a game Josh and JB make a bet that would have JB dropping his pants in the lunchroom if he loses. Josh’s dad loves donuts, giving basketball pointers, and telling stories about the twins. Josh lays out five reasons he has dreadlocks – they distinguish him from everyone else, especially his brother, and when his dad played serious basketball he had dreads. Josh didn’t like the name at first, but feels he has grown into it, and regardless, everyone calls him by it. He introduces himself to the reader explaining that his nickname is Filthy McNasty, a name his father bestowed upon him because of his love for the Jazz musician Horace Silver, and the album Filthy McNasty. ![]() The story begins on the basketball court as Josh shoots. Though they are identical, it is easy to tell them apart because JB has short-cropped hair and Josh has dreadlocks. His twin brother also loves basketball too, and both play on the school team. Told in verse, The Crossover is narrated by twelve-year-old Josh, a middle schooler and a great basketball player. Twelve-year-old Josh and his twin brother JB live and breathe basketball, but when a new girl shows up at school, and their dad’s health falters, priorities change.
